Low-Volume CNC Machining

Low-volume machining sits between one-off prototyping and stable repeat production. Quantity alone does not define it: setup recurrence, revision maturity, material availability, inspection effort and delivery schedule determine the right production method.

Workholding for changing demand

Soft jaws, modular fixtures or simple dedicated locators can improve consistency without the investment of a full production fixture. The fixture should reference drawing datums, permit chip clearance and avoid distorting thin or compliant parts.

First piece and batch inspection

A first piece confirms the program, tool offsets and datum strategy before the full batch proceeds. Inspection frequency should follow feature risk and process stability. Critical dimensions may require more frequent checks than nonfunctional clearance dimensions.

Control cost without hiding risk

Cost reductions come from fewer setups, appropriate stock, practical tolerances, standardized tooling, balanced lot size and clear acceptance criteria. Skipping the 2D drawing or postponing finish requirements often creates rework rather than savings.

RFQ information to provide

  • 3D model plus a revision-controlled 2D PDF drawing.
  • Material grade, condition, quantity and delivery destination.
  • Critical dimensions, datums, fits, threads and surface roughness.
  • Heat treatment, coating, masking, cosmetic or packaging requirements.
  • Requested material certificates, dimensional report or first-article scope.

Provide controlled 3D and 2D data, material and condition, quantity, finish, critical characteristics, inspection documentation and target delivery. State any approved alternatives or supplier restrictions.

Tolerance is reviewed by feature against size, geometry, material, setup, process sequence and measurement. The quotation records assumptions; it does not extend one tight value to every dimension.

Selected dimensional reports, first-article records or material documents can be included when the required scope and format are stated before quotation.
