CNC Rapid Prototyping

A CNC prototype is most valuable when it answers a defined engineering question: fit, function, load path, thermal behavior, assembly, appearance or manufacturing risk. The process can use production-intent material while preserving flexibility for design changes.

Start with the purpose of the prototype

An appearance model may prioritize cosmetic surfaces and finish; a functional prototype may prioritize interfaces, material condition and test loads. State which features must represent production and which can be simplified. This avoids paying production-level cost for dimensions that do not affect the learning objective.

DFM and revision control

Early review can identify inaccessible features, unnecessarily tight tolerances, fragile walls, ambiguous datums and finish buildup. Each design change should receive a new revision. Do not replace a CAD model while leaving an old drawing revision in the RFQ package.

Transition toward a repeatable part

After testing, freeze functional datums, critical characteristics, material, finish and inspection method. The next batch can then add repeatable fixtures, first-piece approval and sampling. A prototype program should not silently become production without reviewing these controls.

RFQ information to provide

  • 3D model plus a revision-controlled 2D PDF drawing.
  • Material grade, condition, quantity and delivery destination.
  • Critical dimensions, datums, fits, threads and surface roughness.
  • Heat treatment, coating, masking, cosmetic or packaging requirements.
  • Requested material certificates, dimensional report or first-article scope.

Frequently asked questions

Provide controlled 3D and 2D data, material and condition, quantity, finish, critical characteristics, inspection documentation and target delivery. State any approved alternatives or supplier restrictions.

Tolerance is reviewed by feature against size, geometry, material, setup, process sequence and measurement. The quotation records assumptions; it does not extend one tight value to every dimension.

Selected dimensional reports, first-article records or material documents can be included when the required scope and format are stated before quotation.

Not necessarily. Machine ownership and partner-supported processes are distinguished during capability confirmation where they affect confidentiality, quality or delivery.

Upload the model, drawing and project requirements through the Request a Quote form. Complete RFQs are targeted for review within one business day, subject to complexity and clarification.
