Electrical discharge machining removes conductive material without conventional cutting force. Wire EDM cuts a through profile with a moving wire; sinker EDM reproduces an electrode shape into a cavity. Both are valuable where hardened material, access or corner geometry makes milling impractical.
Wire EDM needs a continuous wire path through the workpiece and is efficient for profiles, punches, dies, slots and precision cutouts. Sinker EDM uses a shaped electrode for blind cavities, ribs, internal corners and details that are not through features. Start holes, flushing, electrode wear and recast-layer requirements must be considered.
Wire diameter, number of skim cuts, material thickness and thermal condition affect size and surface finish. Sinker accuracy depends on electrode manufacture, orbit strategy and wear. If recast layer, microcracking or surface integrity is critical, state the acceptance method before quotation.
Provide controlled 3D and 2D data, material and condition, quantity, finish, critical characteristics, inspection documentation and target delivery. State any approved alternatives or supplier restrictions.
Tolerance is reviewed by feature against size, geometry, material, setup, process sequence and measurement. The quotation records assumptions; it does not extend one tight value to every dimension.
Selected dimensional reports, first-article records or material documents can be included when the required scope and format are stated before quotation.
